Ontario Government’s 2016 Hospital Parking Mandate

The Ontario government worked with patients, patient advocacy groups, hospitals, and the Ontario Hospital Association to devise a plan that would help make Ontario hospital parking more affordable for patients, visitors, and caregivers.
On Oct. 1, 2016, the Government of Ontario mandated all healthcare institutions charging more than $10.00 a day for parking to provide 5-, 10-, and 30-day parking passes that meet the following requirements:
Discounted by 50% off their daily value
Transferable between patients and caregivers
Equipped with in-and-out privileges over a 24-hour period
Valid for one year from the date of purchase
During this time, hospitals relied heavily on their parking suppliers to devise and integrate permit solutions with their parking technology in order to comply with the directive. Since then, several innovations have enhanced the program including multi-campus access, seamless sharing of privileges between family members, and online account top ups.
