4 Technologies to Enhance the Airport Parking Experience

Posted: Aug, 27, 2024 9:21AM ET • 4 min read

Airport parking can be an overwhelming experience for travellers, providing them with an effortless parking experience can result in them becoming reoccurring customers as opposed to finding alternative options for parking or navigating to the airport. We have determined three technologies to integrate into your airport parking to enhance the overall experience.

1. Enhancing Accessibility and Convenience with Electric Vehicle Charging Stations

As the number of electric vehicle owners continues to grow so does the demand for electric vehicle charging stations. Airports can provide a variety of EV charging station options for their visitors. Airports can cater to this demand by offering a variety of EV charging options:

  • Long-term Parking: Install standard charging stations where vehicles can be fully charged over the duration of a traveller's trip.

  • Short-term Parking: Provide fast or ultra-fast charging options for those waiting to pick up passengers, ensuring their vehicles can be quickly charged.

  • Commercial Vehicles: Equip specific areas with fast charging stations for electric taxis and buses, facilitating quick turnarounds.

By offering these facilities, airports can deter EV owners from using alternative parking lots that provide charging options.

2. Frictionless Parking Facility Entry and Exit Using License Plate Recognition (LPR) Technology

A frictionless parking solution not only eliminates various touch-points for customers but also acts as an added level of security for your parking facility. Using license plate recognition (LPR) technology allows facility managers to determine who is provided access and who is denied access entry to the parking facility. Facility managers can define lists for further access control and security, such as block lists, notification lists, and access lists. Additionally, systems can track vehicle movements and generate customer parking patterns, usage, and violations.

License plate recognition can provide improved efficiency for the entry and exit process, reducing the overall wait times and congestion within the parking facility. It can simplify the process for visitors by eliminating the need for physical tickets and permits and can integrate with mobile payment platforms for a seamless experience.

3. Mobile Parking Payment Platform for Simplified Transactions and Access

Integrating a mobile payment platform can eliminate the need to visit a pay station or pay at the exit gate, enabling visitors to manage their parking stay on the go through their mobile device. But that’s not all, most platforms allow visitors to reserve a spot ahead of time, saving valuable time by eliminating the need to search for available spots during peak hours. Allowing customers to spend less time in queues waiting to enter the facility or pay to exit will ultimately provide them with a better airport parking experience.

4. Improving Navigation and Wayfinding Through Smart Parking Guidance Systems

Navigating to an available parking stall can be time-consuming and tedious, installing a parking guidance system with a smart camera can direct visitors to an available parking space quickly and easily. Parking guidance systems not only illuminate above the stall if it’s available or not, they can also be integrated with digital signage and vehicle locator software. Digital signage can be placed at the entrance to the parking facility to let visitors know which levels have availability, while vehicle locator software can help visitors find their vehicle easily, all they have to do is input their vehicle license plate and the system pinpoints the exact location of their parked vehicle.
